Prof. Dr. M. A. Yekta Saraç, President of YÖK, Visits IMU
Prof. Dr. M. A. Yekta Saraç, President of Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK), visited our University on September 23, 2019 and met Rector Prof. Dr. Gülfettin Çelik, the members of our Senate and Board of Directors, Deans, Vice Deans, and Heads of Departments.
President of YÖK Saraç, had a meeting with our academic staff, in which he provided information about the latest developments in Turkish higher education system and said: “We have had the best period of student placement in the last decade.” He noted that Turkish higher education system has come a long way toward achieving many of its quantitative goals and YÖK prioritizes quality now, trying to restructure the system through an elitist approach based on success. He stated that their next goal is “to ensure performance- and merit-based progress”, a goal which YÖK cannot achieve on its own, but all universities should reach a consensus on the issue.
In this context, Saraç underlined the concept of “New YÖK”, where quality and the Higher Education Quality Council plays a big part. As is known, the quality Council monitors and assesses universities in five main areas, which are education, research & development, internalization, budget and financing, and social service and responsibility. Annual success scorecards for universities are of great significance to promote success and quality in higher education in a fair competitive environment.
In the later part of his speech, the President of YÖK provided detailed information about their innovative projects and efforts based on the new YÖK concepts such as diversification of universities, mission differentiation oriented toward regional development, specialization and research universities, prioritized fields, transfer of authority to universities, and digital literacy, as well as chief problems in Turkish higher education. The speech was followed by a Q&A session with our academic staff.
At the end of the meeting, Rector Prof. Dr. Gülfettin Çelik presented a commemorative gift to the President of YÖK, Prof. Dr. M. A. Yekta Saraç.
