MoU Signed with Two Somalian Universities

Istanbul Medeniyet University signed  memoranda of understanding with University of Hargeisa and Frantz Fanon University in the Somaliland Region in Somalia concerning cooperation in postgraduate education in medicine. Signed by our Rector Prof. Dr. M. İhsan Karaman, MD, Dr. Mohamoud Yousuf Muse, Rector of University of Hargeisa, and Dr. Hussein Abdilahi Bulhan, Rector of Frantz Fanon University, the memoranda will be in effect in for a five-year term.

The objective of the MoU is to develop academic, scientific, technical and cultural relations between these three great centers of learning to be made effective and to operate in all areas of mutual interest. In this framework, each university shall endeavor to explore avenues of cooperation and establish arrangements for furthering higher education, capacity building and R&D initiatives including resource sharing for the mutual benefits of all parties.

Specifically, the MoU signed with University of Hargeisa involves post-graduate training in the fields of Surgery, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Family Medicine, while the MoU signed with Frantz Fanon University concerns post-graduate training in the fields of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Public Health. Yet, these areas of cooperation are illustrative and do not limit new and innovative ventures. The universities may also organize joint seminars or conferences.

Due to the existing civil war conditions with adverse effects on all education and health systems in Somaliland, postgraduate medical training is not currently possible in the region. With these memoranda of understanding, Somalian physician of associates will have the chance to receive post-graduate training in Turkey, which will hopefully contribute to meeting the urgent need for competent physicians in the region.
