The first version of the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings (ISR), launched by Times Higher Education (THE), one of the world's most respected rating agencies, in collaboration with Schmidt Science Fellows, to measure universities’ contribution and commitment to interdisciplinary science, has been published. In the Interdisciplinary Science Ranking 2025, which is the first of its kind in university rankings and includes only universities that meet certain criteria, Istanbul Medeniyet University ranked 401-500 globally and 23rd among the universities from Turkey.
In the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings (ISR) 2025, institutions were assessed according to a total of 11 performance indicators in three key areas, each representing a stage in the life cycle of research projects: Inputs (funding); Process (measures of success, facilities, administrative support and promotion); and Outputs (publications, research quality and reputation). Out of these three key areas, our university ranked 27th among Turkish universities in Inputs, 30th in Process and 24th in Outputs.
In order to be included in ISR 2025, universities must meet some basic criteria, such as having at least 100 interdisciplinary research publications in total between 2019 and 2023 and submitting the required data for THE World University Rankings (WUR). In addition, ISR 2025 only covers interdisciplinary studies in high-level subjects of computer science, engineering, life sciences and physical sciences. Meeting all these criteria, 749 universities from around the world and 45 universities from Turkey made it into the ranking.
The data required for ISR 2025 was obtained from the portal data submitted by universities for the WUR ranking, bibliometric data from the Scopus database and survey data obtained from researchers. In this context, 157 million citations, 18 million research publications and survey responses from more than 20,000 academics worldwide were evaluated.
