Discussing Awareness in the Disability Week

The Disability Week Awareness Event organized by our Faculty of Medicine was held in Âşık Paşa Hall on the 16th of May, 2019 and attended by Rector Prof. Dr. Gülfettin Çelik, Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Yaşar Bülbül, Dean Prof. Dr. Mustafa Taşdemir, and our academic staff and students.

Every year, the week of 10-16 May is celebrated as the “International Day of Persons with Disabilities” in 156 UN member countries and in Turkey with various activities and events. The week aims to prevent disabilities and raise awareness about the education, health, accessibility, employment, and other social rights of disabled individuals.

Our Rector delivered a speech at the beginning of the Disability Week event and said: “We do not envision our Medeniyet University simply as a university for academic staff and students. Rather, we intend to create a multidimensional and society-oriented University where different social groups interact with each other and each and every individual have access to.”

Our Rector’s speech was followed by a piano recital by a child patient with cerebral palsy. Prof. Dr. Belgin Erhan, faculty member of our Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, delivered a speech titled ‘What is Disability? Disability Awareness in Turkey’. The speech was followed by the presentations of an adult patient with cerebral palsy and his family and a patient with spinal injury.

Following the patient presentations, the event ended with the closing speech of Rector Prof. Dr. Gülfettin Çelik.
