"A Country Bleeding: Sudan" Event Held

22.01.2026

The first event in the "DuyMasam" series, organized by the Young MASAM Club, was held on January 13, 2026, under the title "A Country Bleeding: Sudan," with the aim of examining the deepening health crisis in Sudan and the historical roots of this crisis.

At the opening of the program, Bushra Ahmed Abubakar, a student at Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Medicine and a member of Young MASAM, addressed the health crisis in Sudan. She emphasized that 70-80% of hospitals have been rendered inoperable due to the war, medical personnel have been targeted while on duty, and epidemics and famine have reached critical levels in regions such as Darfur and Khartoum. The presentation focused on the life-threatening malnutrition crisis, especially among children, and the risks faced by chronically ill patients who have lost access to treatment.

Anadolu Agency correspondent Ahmed Osama Satti then gave a comprehensive presentation on the military coups and civil wars Sudan has experienced since its independence. Satti detailed how the current civil war, which began in April 2023, stemmed from a power struggle between the army and paramilitary forces, leading to large-scale massacres and the world's largest displacement crisis. Satti emphasized that Sudan actually has the potential to be a "food basket," noting that Sudanese farmers have achieved successful harvests despite the war conditions, but that hunger persists because the people cannot access this food. He stated that the main reason 21 million people lack food security is not food scarcity, but the inability to access food due to conflicts and blockades.

The 30 participants in the online event had the opportunity to take an in-depth look at how Sudan's rich cultural heritage is struggling to survive in the shadow of war. Participants followed the presentations with interest, increasing their awareness of the humanitarian situation in the region.
