To the Attention of First-Year Students of the Departments where Medium of Instruction is Turkish
As per Article 5(i) of the Higher Education Law no 2547, foreign language courses in higher education institutions are regarded as common compulsory courses, and they are to be scheduled for at least two terms. In our university, the common compulsory foreign language is English, and it covers basic level A1 and A2 in the European Framework of Reference (CEFR A1/A2).
In every academic year, according to the date specified in the concerned Academic Calendar of the University, an exemption exam is held for the first-year students of the departments where the medium of instruction is Turkish. The students who meet this criterion (including the students who attended the optional English Preparatory Program and failed) are allowed to take the exam.
As per the Regulation on Undergraduate Education and Examination of İstanbul Medeniyet University, students who obtain a score of 60 and above (CC as a letter grade and over) from the exam will be considered successful and exempted from the course titled Foreign Language I (English I) to be offered in the Fall Term and the one titled Foreign Language II (English II) to be offered in the Spring Term. The students who are exempted from the courses can waive their rights by following the required steps to be announced after the exam in accordance with the code of practice, and attend the courses.
FOR ALL THE FACULTIES AND DEPARTMENTS (EXCEPT FOR THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE), THE EXEMPTION EXAM FOR THE COMPULSORY FOREIGN LANGUAGE I AND II COURSES WILL BE HELD ON SEPTEMBER 27, 2019 (FRIDAY) AT 11.00 A.M.
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE THE EXAM ON THE CAMPUSES WHERE THEY ATTEND THEIR CLASSES.
- All the students are expected to be present in the exam halls on time. The exam starts at 11.00 a.m., so students are advised to be present in the exam halls with their ID cards at least 15 minutes before the start of the exam. Latecomers will not be allowed into the exam halls.
- All the announcements about the exam and exam results will be published on the web site of the School of Foreign Languages. Students are advised and expected to check the related website carefully and on a regular basis.
Note: The students who attended the optional English Preparatory School and completed it successfully DO NOT need to take the exemption exam since their grades both for Foreign Language I and Foreign Language II courses will be inserted into the system as AA (as a letter grade) pertaining to the Article 11/1-d of the Regulation on Foreign Language Preparatory Education and Examination (dated April 13, 2019 and numbered 30744) of our University.
