Message for December 3 International Day of Persons with Disabilities
International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly in order to protect the rights of people with disabilities, promote their wellbeing, encourage their social inclusion, and enhance raising awareness in all areas of life. Despite the obvious importance of the “December 3 International Day of Persons with Disabilities” in view of these objectives, “integration” requires supporting individuals with special needs and their families in all areas of life and “learning to live together”, rather than simply organizing special events for this day and advocating for the rights and freedoms of people with disabilities. Thus, responsibility should be shared by every member of society in addition to specialists. Instead of seeing individuals with special needs as persons who always need support and help, the main focus should be on asking “What adaptations can we make to facilitate social coexistence?”. For barriers are often created by “persons without any disabilities”.
It is our sincere wish that the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3 this year will lead to eliminating all the barriers to sharing life in our society.
