35th Scientific Congress of the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA) themed “Health in Africa” was held in Istanbul on the 20-21st of July 2017 in collaboration with Turkish Ministry of Health, Hayat Foundation and Istanbul Medeniyet University. The gala dinner for the congress was held on Friday evening on the 21st in the Front Garden of the historical Dolmabahce Palace and was honored by the participation of HE Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of Turkey with First Lady Emine Erdoğan. Over 1,000 delegates attended the Gala Dinner, including 400 students who participated in the FIMA student camp held concurrently.

Following the screening of the short film called “The Twins of Africa” prepared by Hayat Foundation, our Rector Prof. M. İhsan Karaman, M.D., came to the stage to provide the audience with brief information about the aims and outputs of the congress. Then, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addressed the audience and delivered important messages to African people and the world.

“We are brothers of Africa”

In his speech, President Erdoğan said: “We personally have seen on site what a wreckage those, who try at every opportunity to give us lessons of democracy, law and human rights today, left behind in Africa. We should keep exposing the true face of their civilization, which they built on the tears and the exploited labor of innocent Africans.”

Noting that the great transformation in Turkey’s relations with Africa began when the AK Party came to power in 2002 and Africa rose high on the agenda of Turkish foreign policy after 2005, President Erdoğan said that the process that began in 2005 stably grew stronger in all areas in the last 12 years.

“Africa is not a continent to be exploited”

“We do not approach Africa as a virgin continent with resources ripe for exploitation. We see ourselves as a true friend of Africa. We want to develop long-term cooperation with a win-win approach based on mutual respect and equality,” the President said.

Drawing attention to the incidents that took place at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, President Erdoğan thanked all who contributed to organizing the congress and greeted all the distinguished guests.
